Why Mumbai is still India’s embroidery capital

Mumbai has a rare combination: generations of trained embroidery karigars, a working fashion industry that demands consistency, and a customer base that ranges from a bride ordering one blouse to a label ordering five hundred kurtis. That mix keeps standards high. A studio here has to be able to execute traditional zardozi and aari work as convincingly as a clean corporate monogram.

It also means you have a genuine choice. Rather than accepting whoever is closest, it is worth understanding what separates a workshop that can handle your fabric from one that cannot.

Areas we serve across Mumbai

Our studio is in Dahisar East, on Swami Vivekanand Road near the Police Chowki in Ambawadi — a short ride from Dahisar station and easy to reach from the Western Express Highway.

Western suburbs (most of our walk-in customers)

• Dahisar, Borivali and Kandivali — 5 to 20 minutes away. Most brides and boutique owners from here visit in person to check thread and stone samples against their fabric.
• Malad, Goregaon and Jogeshwari — 20 to 35 minutes by road, one or two stops on the Western Line.
• Andheri, Vile Parle and Santacruz — a steady stream of designer and export-house work comes from here, usually sampling first, then production.
• Bandra, Khar and Juhu — mostly bridal and occasionwear, often collected and delivered by courier to save the trip.
• Mira Road, Bhayandar, Naigaon, Vasai and Virar — just north of us and very easy to reach; a large share of our boutique clients are based here.

Central, harbour and Navi Mumbai

• Thane, Mulund, Bhandup and Ghatkopar — we handle these mainly by courier, with sample photos and video approvals in between.
• Dadar, Parel, Lower Parel and Worli — designers and studios here usually send fabric by courier and approve a sample before bulk.
• Vashi, Nerul, Kharghar and Panvel — courier both ways, with a WhatsApp video call to review the work before dispatch if you want extra certainty.

In short: if you are in the western suburbs, visiting is simple. If you are anywhere else in Mumbai or the MMR, a courier and a few photos work just as well — the quality does not change.

What to bring when you visit

A ten-minute preparation saves a second trip. Bring:

• The fabric or garment, even if it is not yet stitched. Technique depends entirely on the base — georgette, organza, velvet, silk and cotton each behave differently under the needle.
• A reference image. A screenshot from Instagram or Pinterest is fine. It tells us the density and style you have in mind far faster than words.
• Your deadline. Wedding dates, exhibitions and delivery dates change what is realistic.
• Quantity. One piece and fifty pieces are quoted very differently.
• Any measurements or placement notes — neckline depth, sleeve length, border width, motif spacing.

Message us before you come so someone is free to sit with you properly rather than between production runs.

Ordering without visiting

Most of our Mumbai customers now order entirely over WhatsApp. The sequence is simple:

1. Send the brief — reference photo, fabric, garment, quantity, deadline.
2. We respond with questions and a quotation covering technique, materials and timeline.
3. You courier the fabric (or we advise where to source it).
4. We share a sample or progress photos for approval before completing the work.
5. We courier it back, packed to avoid crushing the embroidery.

What custom embroidery costs in Mumbai

Anyone quoting a fixed rate before seeing your design is guessing. Real pricing depends on:

• Technique — machine embroidery is the most economical; aari and zardozi are hand-intensive and priced accordingly.
• Coverage and density — a scattered motif costs a fraction of full-coverage bridal work.
• Materials — plain thread versus zari, stones, crystals and cutdana.
• Fabric — delicate bases need slower handling and more careful framing.
• Quantity — per-piece cost falls significantly on bulk orders.
• Timeline — compressed deadlines require reallocating the workshop.

How to judge an embroidery studio

Whether or not you work with us, these five checks are worth making anywhere in Mumbai:

1. Ask to see the reverse of a finished piece. The back reveals the discipline of the work better than the front does.
2. Ask what they would change about your reference. A studio that only says yes has not thought about your fabric.
3. Confirm the sampling stage in writing for anything beyond a few pieces.
4. Ask how they protect your design. Designers and boutiques should expect confidentiality as standard.
5. Check that one person owns your order from brief to delivery, so nothing is lost between hands.
